  • RAYVILLE CIRCULATION ASSISTANT 

    SUMMARY 

    Under general supervision, responsibility is assigned for a variety of technical duties in various phase of library operations, including the exercising of judgment and discretion in performing library routines with technical advice readily available when needed, and determining duties and methods as necessary to accomplish objectives. 

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICE OF JOB 

                Work is of average difficulty requiring close supervision until job is learned, then only periodic supervision.  Employees may develop their own sequences and methods within the scope of established policies. 

    EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative only) 

    Charges and discharges library materials 

    Assesses and collects fines and copy money 

    Locates books and files registration cards 

    Repairs books 

    Assists with story hour 

    Assists in preparing displays and posters 

    Answers phone 

    Assists patrons in using computers 

    Shelves books 

    Shelf reading 

    Performs related and other work as required 

    Other duties as assigned by Library Director

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

    Training and Experience 

    Two years of college or university training, or high school diploma or equivalent plus three years’ work experience in public service capacity.

    Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

    Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions   

    Ability to use resourcefulness, tact, and courtesy in dealing with library patrons and the public

    Ability to relate to and communicate effectively with fellow employees 

    Ability to make decisions recognizing established library practices and policies

    Ability to learn circulation software

    Some familiarity with computers, software and internet access

    Sufficient skill in operating audio-visual and other library equipment 

    Sufficient skill in typing to net 35 words per minute

  • OUTREACH 

    SUMMARY 

                Responsible for planning and organizing group activities outside of the Library.  Encourages participation in all types of programs.

    EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative only) 

    Plans and organizes programs, events, and activities around community interests outside of the Library. 

    Encourages the community to participate. 

    Documents community participation in group recreational programs outside of the Library. 

    Makes fliers, brochures, and handouts. 

    Maintains the activity storage area in a neat, clean manner.  Picks up supplies after each activity and returns furniture to its original position. 

    Takes pictures of all programs for scrapbook. 

    Assists in helping with story hours for Summer Reading Program at headquarters branch when needed. 

    Helps prepare the large display unit at headquarters branch 

    Works front desk when needed 

    Answer phone 

    Performs all other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

    Training and Experience 

    Must be 18 years of age or older.  High school diploma or equivalent GED.  Some college education preferred.  Must have at least one year’s experience in conducting group activities.  Experience in working with all age groups preferred.

    Able to lead and motivate people; excellent interpersonal skills 

    Good planning and organizational skills 

    Able to communicate well, both orally and in writing 

    Self-starter; able to carry out diverse duties with minimal supervision 

    Enjoys thinking of new ideas; is creative and resourceful 

    Good computer skills (i.e. MS Word, Printshop, etc)
